Denbighshire County Council’s Working Denbighshire project has recently been awarded a grant from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust to employ a ‘Force for Change’ Employment Mentor.
Funding will help support individuals that have served in the Armed Forces and are in or at risk of being in poverty and who need guidance and support to gain employment.
This mentoring scheme has already supported many veterans with employment and education gaps.
Cllr Richard Mainon, Lead Member for The Armed Forces Covenant for Denbighshire, said:
“The Employment mentoring scheme is important in that it allows us to offer help to veterans when leaving the Armed Forces.
“We have recently helped an ex-Armed Forces Officer through the scheme, who was living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as well as other mental and physical challenges.
“Following the veteran’s referral, the Working Denbighshire Engagement Officer was able to provide him with volunteering opportunities, training schemes and mentoring sessions. In result, the veteran gained the relevant skills and experience needed to succeed in his chosen career, that of a support worker.
“The officer has now achieved a full time position as a support worker and has been allocated new accommodation.
“Supporting veterans on their pathway towards employment is vital for individuals who are struggling and this strategic approach makes support more accessible for those who need it.
“It also provides us with the right resources to mentor and support these individuals and get them back into employment.”
Although this funding only provides the opportunity to pilot the scheme locally at the moment, if successful there is a view to expanding across North Wales next year to help other ex-Armed Officers.
Veterans will be allocated 1-2-1 sessions with the Force for Change Employment Mentor to help facilitate their journey towards employment and support them to achieve their goals.
The Force for Change Employment Mentor will support individuals by helping them identify their strengths and work towards their desired goals to create a more sustainable future for themselves, their families and their communities.
They will also help by signposting support, provide training and volunteering opportunities and facilitate individuals on their journey towards sustainable employment
