North Wales has seen an increase in demand for tradesmen such as carpenters in recent years. In 2021, construction output in Wales is estimated to have grown by over 20%, which exceeded the UK level of growth. On top of this, there were over 18,000 searches for ‘carpenters near me’, which has indicated that despite the cost of living crisis, trends are showing that there is still a demand in the home improvement space. Carpentry can encompass anything from installing floors to crafting furniture, meaning there’s a wide range of skills to be put to good use.

Local construction projects, preservation efforts and growing trends in customised craftsmanship have been linked to this increasing demand in North Wales in particular. Each requires these skills for different reasons.

Growing construction industry

North Wales is renowned for its robust construction industry. Factoring in everything from residential to commercial projects, there’s plenty to keep local tradesmen busy with work.

Infrastructure projects have also gained traction in recent years, in light of proposed improvements facilitated by net zero targets to help combat climate change. Within construction, there’s a strong need for skilled carpenters to install wooden fixtures or fittings, hence the growing demand.

Preserving heritage and traditional craftsmanship

On top of increasing construction projects, there’s a need to help preserve heritage pieces, which requires traditional craftsmanship. Some carpenters can specialise in conservation projects using traditional woodworking techniques, for example. This might involve working with natural wood, as many modern objects today are made from very different materials, often requiring machinery more so than a carpenter.

North Wales is rich with heritage buildings, statues, sculptures and more – and conservation using these conventional woodworking approaches is something only highly skilled carpenters can achieve without using more contemporary shortcuts involving adhesives or fasteners.

Bespoke carpentry and custom woodwork

Bespoke carpentry and custom woodwork require wider carpentry skillsets. With a growing demand for bespoke carpentry, this means that there’s a demand for high-quality carpentry tools too. Whether someone is enquiring about outdoor timber installations, customised furniture or interior makeovers using skilled carpentry, there’s a demand for bespoke carpentry projects in North Wales that only an expert tradesman can handle.

Depending on the project ahead, only certain tools will be appropriate for the job. There will likely be a need for cutting, drilling, fixing and framing tools, as well as follow-up tools for bench or handheld cutting. Most carpenters also need marking tools, sufficient lighting and cleaning tools to clear up any waste created during the project.
