34% of Welsh residents have been charged unexpected holiday fees
HSBC UK have recently surveyed over 2,000 UK residents to uncover their summer holiday travel plans and what they value the most whilst abroad.
The results revealed some key findings from Welsh holiday-goers top holiday destinations to their holiday spending.
HSBC UK’s survey showed Welsh holiday-goers favour package holidays abroad the most- according to 29%, followed by 26% of Welsh residents preferring city breaks abroad.
29% of Welsh respondents are planning on visiting Spain this summer, followed by Italy (17%) and Greece (16%). However there was key preparation for this, as Welsh respondents, on average, take 10 months to save up for their main holiday.
The survey emphasises the importance of being aware of unexpected fees, as a notable 34% of Welsh respondents have been charged unexpected fees whilst abroad. This figure includes 47% of Welsh residents that were charged for using their card abroad, followed by 43% being charged for currency conversion.
Interestingly 60% of Welsh respondents have never disclosed how much they’ve spent on their holiday with respondents more likely to tell their friends (51%) rather than their partner 34%. 27% of Welsh respondents say this is because they don’t like to talk about their finances.
HSBC UK’s Head of Everyday Banking, Pella Frost, said: “We all like to splash out on holiday but splurge regret can cast a shadow over the whole experience.
“Over a third of holidaymakers get caught out by unexpected fees making a holiday splurge that little bit more costly.
“With no HSBC fees on card spend or ATM withdrawals abroad, Global Money helps customers avoid unexpected costs and makes it easy to plan and stick to a holiday budget.
“Customers can manage their spending easily through the app so they can forget about fees and focus on fun with their families or friends.”
