Pupils from two local schools were invited this week to play a part in the project to regenerate Rhyl Town Centre, and to literally leave their mark in the town’s history. The pupils were invited to add messages onto steel beams which will be installed on the site of the town’s new Queen’s Market. The current regeneration of the Queen’s Buildings is an integral part of the wider Rhyl Town Centre regeneration project.

Pupils from Ysgol Tir Morfa and Ysgol Glan Clwyd were invited by Rhyl Town Council and Wynne Construction (who are undertaking the construction work), to come along on Wednesday, 7th December to write a message and sign the beams before they are erected on site. Among others present at the event were Rhyl Mayor Diane King and Helen Spafford of Denbighshire County Council.

The Queen’s Market will be located in the old Queen’s Buildings, and will include 18 individual units, a double-sided bar and large internal and external events spaces which can be utilised to hold events, markets or used as a seating area.

The Queen’s Buildings was acquired by the Council in 2019, with the former hotel, arcade, nightclub and market hall in a state of significant disrepair. The Council decided that the dilapidated buildings would play an important role in the regeneration of Rhyl Town Centre.

Work continues apace on the site, this being the latest in a series of recent major projects in the town which have been made possible by multi-million pound private and public investment. Other projects include the renovation of the town’s Pavilion Theatre and the creation of the 1891 Restaurant, two national branded hotels, the SC2 Waterpark and Ninja Tag, and improvements to the Pont y Ddraig Bridge and Harbour. Other projects, including the creation of co-working spaces for new enterprises and the Gerddi Heulwen housing and community park aim to assist new businesses and improve the lives of the town’s residents.

These are exciting times for Rhyl Town Centre as it prepares for the future. New buildings and the renovation and regeneration of existing ones provide an opportunity to add new stories to those from the town’s history both for residents and visitors. The pupils from Ysgol Tir Morfa and Ysgol Glan Clwyd have already ensured that they have left their mark on their own page of that history book.
