A proposal to install new mobile phone antennas on the roof of Venue Cymru in Llandudno has been approved by Conwy County Borough Council’s Planning Committee, despite a recommendation for refusal from planning officers.

At a meeting held today, 11 councillors voted in favour of granting planning permission, with one councillor abstaining. The application will need to be reaffirmed at a follow-up meeting next month to formally finalise the decision.

Council officers had advised against approval, citing concerns raised by the council’s Conservation Officer. The objections were based on the potential impact of the installation on the character of the local conservation area.

However, the Planning Committee ultimately sided with local campaigners who argued that improved mobile connectivity was essential for both residents and businesses in the town.

Welsh Member of the Senedd, Janet Finch-Saunders MS, who led the campaign in support of the application, welcomed the outcome.

“The current mobile signal in Llandudno is shocking,” she said. “Mobile payment machines are failing, leaving businesses unable to take payments; and residents and visitors cannot get hold of loved ones.”

Finch-Saunders thanked local supporters and businesses who backed her campaign, including Mostyn Estates Ltd and telecommunications provider Clarke Telecom, who submitted the application.

“This telecommunications provider has listened to the serious concerns I raised on behalf of the community, designed a solution, and delivered a successful planning application,” she added.

While the application still requires formal ratification next month, the decision marks a significant step forward in efforts to address long-standing concerns over mobile coverage in the area.

The installation of the antennas on Venue Cymru is intended to boost mobile phone signal quality across Llandudno, a coastal resort town that has faced ongoing issues with connectivity.

The project, if completed, is expected to improve access to mobile services for residents, tourists, and local businesses alike.
