Denbighshire Pupils Lead on Nature-Friendly School Habitat Project

YLL2

Pupils from primary schools across Denbighshire have taken a hands-on role in designing and planting a new nature habitat on their school grounds, supporting local biodiversity and outdoor learning opportunities.

The initiative saw young learners work alongside Denbighshire County Council’s Biodiversity Team and countryside rangers to establish a dedicated nature area at their school site. The project involved planting hedgerows, trees and other vegetation designed to create thriving habitats for wildlife, while also providing educational benefits and wellbeing spaces for students.

Children involved in the project took part in practical activities such as planting and selecting suitable locations for habitat features. These activities were aimed at giving pupils real-world experience in environmental stewardship and reinforcing the importance of nature on their doorstep.

Councillors and representatives from the council praised the pupils for their enthusiasm and hands-on contribution. The work complements wider county efforts to improve tree canopies and green spaces in schools, aligned with Denbighshire’s nature recovery and climate goals.

This nature-focused project also supports a broader push to boost biodiversity across school grounds, offering both educational and environmental value. Organisers say such programmes help foster a deeper connection between children and the natural world, while aiding local ecological networks.
