CPRW supports the Glyndŵr National Park
CPRW, the Welsh Countryside Charity, is calling for strong and unequivocal support for the proposed Glyndŵr National Park, following Natural Resources Wales’s decision to make a National Park Designation Order.
CPRW has a long history of championing countryside protection in Wales and played an important role in the campaigns that led to the creation of Wales’s first National Parks. Those decisions continue to deliver lasting benefits for landscapes, communities and the nation as a whole.
The most recent NRW consultation in 2025 showed clear public backing:
· 53% in support, with a further 14% expressing conditional support
· This represents around two-thirds of respondents in favour
The results indicate that many communities recognise the benefits the Park would bring, including sustainable tourism, economic diversification, cultural and heritage protection, nature recovery, climate resilience and opportunities for farming and land management.
The Glyndŵr National Park was identified in the Welsh Government’s 2021 manifesto. While progress has been slower than hoped, the current stage is a crucial step towards delivering that commitment.
Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales have confirmed that the new Park would not lead to funding cuts for existing National Parks or local authorities, and that public funding would be greater than under the current AONB / National Landscapes arrangements. CPRW expects these commitments to be honoured in full.
Jonty Colchester, Chairman of CPRW, said: “The Glyndŵr National Park represents a rare opportunity to secure long-term benefits for nature, local communities and Wales as a whole. At this important moment, CPRW believes it is right to support a positive, ambitious vision for the future of our countryside.”
CPRW support in principle the designation of the Glyndŵr National Park.
