MS Visits Glan Conwy Bridge Project as Work Progresses on Long-Awaited Active Travel Route

Glan Conwy Bridge 8

A new active travel route linking Glan Conwy with Llandudno Junction is moving forward, with the local Senedd Member visiting the construction site to see how the project is progressing.

Janet Finch-Saunders recently visited the location of the scheme, which will create a new walking and cycling link from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reserve in Glan Conwy to nearby communities.

The project, which has been under development for more than two decades, aims to provide a safe and accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users and families with pushchairs.

Once completed, the scheme is expected to offer a scenic and practical connection between the two areas while supporting active travel across the Conwy Valley.

Construction work is being carried out by Jennings Building and Civil Engineering Ltd, a firm based in Colwyn Bay. Project organisers say efforts have been made to ensure the scheme benefits the local economy, with materials sourced locally wherever possible.

This includes British steel and stone sourced from the town of Ruthin, which will be used as part of the bridge structure.

The wider project includes the construction of a three-metre-wide shared-use path designed for both walkers and cyclists. Two new bridges will also be built to cross the Conwy Valley Line and the Afon Ganol.

Developers expect the full scheme to be completed by July 2026.

Speaking after visiting the site, Finch-Saunders said it was encouraging to see progress being made on a project that has been planned for many years.

She said the new route will provide a safe and accessible link between Glan Conwy and Llandudno Junction while allowing residents and visitors to enjoy one of the most scenic parts of North Wales.

The Aberconwy MS also highlighted the importance of improving local connectivity and developing safer routes for active travel within communities.

She added that it was positive to see construction progressing well as work continues towards the expected completion next year.
