Council brings climate change work to school

Prestatyn pupils have been given a taste of how council roles are tackling climate change.

Denbighshire County Council held an engagement session with Prestatyn High pupils to showcase how important climate change has become in everyday operation life for the local authority.

In July 2019, the Council passed a motion to declare a Climate Change and Ecological Emergency. A cross party-political working group was established to oversee the development of a Climate and Ecological Change Strategy.

The Council has also committed to becoming become Net Carbon Zero and more Ecologically Positive Council by 2030.

Year 9 Geography pupils were given an insight into the roles and running of the Council with the emphasis on how saving our environment has shaped jobs and future thinking.

They were introduced to how Council staff are adapting to meet the Council’s goal of becoming net zero by 2030 and provided tips on how they can help achieve this target.

A presentation to the group also showed the types of local work opportunities available to them at the Council if they went on study Environmental Science and Geography.

The session was also attended by Denbighshire County Council Chairman Cllr Arwel Roberts who said: “We are grateful for Prestatyn High inviting us in to run this session with the pupils as we are keen to engage further with the younger generation about the climate change work we do as a Council and how they can also support this themselves.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, added: “The Council has opportunities for pupils to get involved with our climate change work, at Prestatyn High they have already support our Schools Tree Planting project. So it is great to also be able to give those who are interested in a career in this direction a good in-depth look at suitable roles that are available at local authorities.”
