Denbighshire Attractions to Light Up in Purple for Holocaust Memorial Day 2026
Several landmark attractions across Denbighshire will be illuminated in purple on Tuesday 27 January as part of a county-wide commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day 2026.
The initiative, led by Denbighshire County Council in partnership with lighting specialists DLL, supports the national Light the Darkness campaign. The campaign sees public buildings and landmarks across the UK lit up in remembrance of those murdered during the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides.
Purple lighting will be displayed at a number of prominent visitor attractions and historic sites across the county. Council leaders say the visual tribute is intended both to honour the victims of genocide and to reinforce the importance of challenging prejudice, discrimination and hatred in modern society.
Holocaust Memorial Day is observed annually on 27 January, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. The 2026 commemoration adopts the theme “Bridging Generations”, which highlights the responsibility of younger generations to carry forward the lessons of the Holocaust as survivor testimony becomes increasingly rare.
The theme encourages reflection on how memory, education and action can be connected across generations to ensure that the atrocities of the past are neither forgotten nor repeated.
Residents, schools and local businesses across Denbighshire are being encouraged to take part in the national moment of remembrance by supporting the Light the Darkness initiative at 8pm on the day. This may include lighting windows, buildings or community spaces in purple, or holding small acts of remembrance.
The council has said its participation reflects an ongoing commitment to inclusion, education and remembrance, and to supporting national efforts that promote understanding and stand against all forms of hatred and intolerance.
