Design consultancy reveals its role in shaping Flintshire’s new Ysgol Mynydd Isa Campus
Strategic design consultancy Space Zero has revealed its role in the creation of the new Ysgol Mynydd Isa Campus, a landmark education project that has welcomed more than 1,300 pupils this September.
Commissioned by Flintshire Council, Space Zero was responsible for the interior design, manufacture and installation of the fitted furniture across the combined nursery, primary and secondary campus.
The Manchester-based consultancy’s work ensured that every classroom and specialist space opened ready for learning, from teaching walls and science labs to cloakrooms and storage solutions.
A key challenge was uniting two schools under one shared entrance while preserving their individuality. Space Zero’s design team tackled this by creating distinct interior identities for the primary and secondary areas. Carefully chosen layouts, finishes and materials gave each its own character, while maintaining a consistent sense of place across the wider campus.
Wayne Taylor, Founder and CEO of Space Zero, said: “Our purpose has always been to rethink the possibilities of education environments, so that every learner has the best chance to flourish.
“Delivering this project for the start of term is a significant collective achievement, and we are proud that hundreds of students will walk into spaces designed to support their growth and potential from the very beginning.
“By coordinating closely with contractors, architects and supply partners, Space Zero has delivered a diverse pipeline of projects on time and on budget, ensuring hundreds of children and young people began the new term in inspiring environments.”
Ysgol Mynydd Isa Campus form part of a wider programme of 13 schools completed across England, Scotland and Wales this summer, together providing new and refurbished environments for more than 9,000 students. Spanning nursery, primary, secondary, SEND, faith schools, colleges and universities, the projects reflect the full breadth of the education sector.
Wayne added: “Every project we deliver is about people: empowering teachers with the tools to inspire, giving pupils spaces where they feel safe and motivated, and reassuring parents that their children are getting the best possible start.”
“Our role is to listen, collaborate and create environments that honour that trust. Whether it’s a specialist college or a local primary, our commitment is the same: to design schools that enable learning, nurture wellbeing, and serve communities for generations to come.”
