How to make the most out of your WFH space
The way we work has changed for many of us in recent years. Flexible and remote working was something a handful of people had in place before the pandemic. Now, remote and hybrid setups are common and prospective employees often look at whether home-based working is a possibility before accepting a job offer.
With working from home now more typical than ever, there’s an appetite for creating a set space in the home that can be set aside as a work area. If you’re trying to make the most of this space in your own home, here are some ideas to help.
Why is it important to create a working space?
Before we look at how to maximise the potential of your WFH area, it’s worth thinking about why having this area is important. One of the key reasons is that you can boost productivity and work efficiently. Many people already feel more motivated if they’re working from home, so having a space where you can work means you’re more likely to get your job done effectively.
This, in turn, can be good for your career. If you’re doing a great job from home, you can show that you’re a reliable team member – wherever you’re based.
The right spot
You might have been working in one corner of your home for a while. But it’s worth reassessing your current setup to see if it’s still suitable.
Consider the space you have. You’ll need to be based somewhere that’s practical. You’ll need room for your computer and screens. If possible, try to avoid high traffic areas in your home where you’re likely to be distracted and if you have access to lots of natural light, even better!
Tidy up
It can be easy to get used to clutter when you’re working from home. Your personal life and work life can easily become intertwined as your desk fills up with the kids’ toys and car tax reminder letters.
Try to clear away everything but the essentials. Think about what you need to do your job effectively and organise cables, pens and stationery so that everything is safely stored nearby. Then, focus on adding clever storage options that can home any other items.
Check your setup
Now focus on your equipment. Is your hardware working? Do you need to reroute wires so that you can work comfortably? By clearing everything away, you can maximise space.
Your own wellbeing is important too. Take the time to check that your screens are in the best place so that you’re not straining your neck and back and investing in a comfortable office chair can be beneficial too.
A final flourish
The practical details are important, but you can also personalise the space too. After all, you’re sitting there for a large chunk of your day and your working week, so it’s a good idea to make it your own. Add some plants and a few photographs and choose pens and notepads that make you happy.
This is your WFH setup, so make it work for you.
