It’s Not Just Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Putting Wrexham On The Map

An online sports retailer is bringing attention and opportunity to Wrexham in North Wales as its rapid growth has seen revenue increase by 150% in the last two years. Revenue for the company increased from £28m in 2019 to £70m in 2021, whilst staff numbers more than doubled in the same period.

The company was officially founded in 2009 but the foundations for the business were laid long before that when founder Alex Lovén was in school. Having purchased a cricket bat online for £60, he noticed the manufacturers sticker and got in touch with the company to enquire about a direct price. After receiving a reply saying the cost would be £6, Lovén purchased 10 bats and began selling them to friends and teachers.

This experience planted a seed in Lovén’s head and in 2009 Net World Sports was born. From there, he set out on a mission to build a sports equipment product offering that covered mainstream and niche sports, with equipment designed to cater for all levels of play from beginners and grassroots to elite competition.

Built from nothing, the business is now established as a powerhouse in the sports equipment world. Manchester United, Manchester City, West Ham and Southampton all utilise the companies FORZA football equipment, with many other leading football clubs around the world including PSG, RB Leipzig, Real Betis and Feyenoord doing the same. The company will be supplying its first official FIFA event this year with the FIFA Qatar Arab Cup.

Aside from football equipment, the business stocks and distributes its own brand products for more than 30 other sports around the world from its Wrexham base. Rugby customers include Bristol Bears and York City Knights, cricket clubs using their equipment include Durham CCC and Somerset CCC, whilst customers from other sports include Tennis Wales, England Handball, England Lacrosse, Baseball Ireland and Sky Sports Golf.

The rapid growth has led to the recent announcement of a new £25M warehouse and office that will be located on Wrexham Industrial Estate less than a mile away from their current base. Work on the new 411,000sq ft development which will feature an onsite restaurant, bar, running track, tennis court, football pitch and gym began in September 2021 and the build is on track for completion in August 2022.

Alex Lovén, Founder and Managing Director at Net World Sports comments “Over the last 13+ years the business has been on an unbelievable journey, and we aren’t stopping there. It’s fantastic that we’re able to put the town on the map and showcase how an underdog business based in Wrexham can overachieve to supply the biggest sports teams and organisations in the world. We’re a business that is built by the people of Wrexham for the people of Wrexham, and we’re proud to champion the town and its people as we continue to grow”.

In the last 12 months the company has sent out over 870,00 parcels to 134 countries around the world. Its new base will create around 20 new job opportunities initially, with that number set to increase significantly over the coming months and years.
