More pupils dig deep to improve county biodiversity
Denbighshire primary pupils have created a stronger biodiversity right on their own school ground.
Ysgol Carreg Emlyn pupils have been working with Denbighshire County Council’s Countryside, Biodiversity and Climate Change teams to make a big difference to the biodiversity around their school.
As part of Denbighshire County Council’s school tree planting project, pupils helped plant nearly 1,000 individual and hedgerow trees on the Clocaenog school’s land.
Altogether the project which is currently underway will see approximately 9,000 trees planted at county school sites to improve local biodiversity and increase carbon absorption.
Denbighshire County Council staff are also working with other schools to enhance their grounds to add interest for children and wildlife whilst still ensuring space for recreational play is preserved.
These include: Ysgol Bro Famau, Ysgol Bodnant, Prestatyn High School, Ysgol Melyd, Ysgol Esgob Morgan, Ysgol Dewi Sant, Y Rhyl and Ysgol Penmorfa.
Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are really pleased to see Ysgol Carreg Emlyn pupils and others across the county dig deep to help improve the biodiversity around their school and for Denbighshire as a whole.
“The enthusiasm of the pupils towards this project has been fantastic and their commitment to helping tackling climate change really gives us heart that we can continue to improve the biodiversity and environment of Denbighshire.”
