North Wales Residents Take to the Roads Over 20mph Campaign

North Wales protestors, who remain unhappy about Wales introduction of a blanket 20mph policy, took proudly to the roads across North Wales yesterday, with convoys organised by two North Wales Facebook groups hitting the tarmac.

Conwy county residents say No to Blanket 20 limits and Denbighshire Say No to 20mph groups both organised events yesterday which were well supported.

Tina Lee, organiser of the Conwy protest, said the atmosphere had been friendly and encouraging, with the sunny but cold weather bringing people out.

Tina said:

“We had a really great response from the public – our convoy started from West Shore prom in Llandudno, from there we headed to Penrhyn Bay prom, Rhos on Sea, Colwyn Bay, then drove through Old Colwyn, Llanddulas and Abergele. Using the roundabout at Abergele we returned going through Llanddulas, Old Colwyn, Colwyn Bay, West End, Mochdre, Llandudno Junction. Deganwy and back at West Shore.

“I’d like to thank Beau Richards, Sue Edwards and Helen Roberts for the convoy updates, and helping us stay together through traffic lights and so on.   Of course, I also must thank everyone that came and joined the convoy and to the people who saw us, clapped and lent their support across the day.  This is a really unpopular policy and we are determined to keep fighting for change.”

Sarah Jones, organiser of the Denbighshire protest, told North Wales Pioneer: “We went through each town in convoy. The cars were decorated with posters and pendants. We had a lot of ‘beeps’ and thumbs up in support from other motorists on the roads we went through and from pedestrians in the towns.

The protests follow others which have taken place across Wales, both locally in towns and cities and in Cardiff on the steps of the Senedd.  More protests are planned across Wales.

The petition was submitted last month, but if this weekend is anything to go by, the controversial 20mph issue is not likely to subside any time soon.

The 20mph Petitioner’s wife, Lisa Baker, said:

“I’m thankful to everyone across Wales for voicing their disagreement with this policy.  As my husband is the petitioner, I hope it can been resolved sooner rather than later, because the consultation was not adequate in our view.  Keep watching this space.”
