Reminiscence sessions return for 2025 at Denbighshire Libraries
Denbighshire Libraries are inviting residents to join them on a trip down memory lane.
Held at Ruthin and Rhyl Libraries, a series of reminiscence sessions are to be held at Ruthin on the 25th February and 25th March from 1.30pm-3.00pm, and held at Rhyl on the 18th February and 18th March, 1.30pm-3.00pm.
Both libraries have a collection of memory boxes and bags, which hold nostalgic items that residents can interact with. Most of the items are from the 1950’s era, and are themed around Seaside trips, Childhood Days, Memories of Music, 1950s cinema or the 1950s Workplace. The boxes and bags contain a variety of objects designed to rekindle memories and spark conversations.
For smaller sessions there are a collection of memory bags which can be borrowed, just like a book.
The sessions are funded by the Books Council Wales to help promote Reading Well, a national scheme supporting people to understand and manage their health and wellbeing using helpful reading.
The books are all chosen and recommended by health experts, as well as by people with lived experience of the conditions and topics covered. There are four Reading Well collections, Reading Well for Dementia, Reading Well for Children, Reading Well for Teens and Reading Well for Mental Health. The books can be borrowed free of charge from Libraries, and some are also available digitally via Borrowbox.
Councillor Emrys Wynne, Lead Member for Welsh language, Culture and Heritage said:
“These boxes and bags are a great way for our older residents to reconnect with their past, with a number of sentimental and interesting items ready to be borrowed free of charge.
The boxes and bags help spark conversations and rekindle memories, and are ideal for care home or group settings also.”
