Rhyl Central Car Park re-opens in time for today’s SC2 opening

Today sees the opening of Rhyl’s new SC2 attraction and Rhyl Central Car Park has also re-opened after extensive renovations.

The £15 million waterpark includes Wales’ first TAGactive play arena, indoor and outdoor water play for all ages and abilities, flume rides, beach style paddling, feature slides and themed food outlets. There will also be a bar and terrace open seasonally.

The water park is expected to bring more visitors to the town, with operators already receiving excellent feedback from locals who have been invited to try out the facilities prior to today’s opening.

The newly refurbished car park will give visitors a better experience.  Renovations include improved signage, two new pedestrian entrances and an additional ramp to improve accessibility, new lighting, ventilation, and improved CCTV coverage.

Cllr Hugh Evans OBE, leader of Denbighshire County Council, said:

“This work has transformed the car park, offering residents and visitors to Rhyl a better experience.

“The car park has been fitted with new energy efficient lighting and we have ensured the car park feels safer and looks more attractive.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while this work was carried out. The current regeneration programme for Rhyl aims to increase the number of tourists and visitors to the resort and this car park helps accommodate those visitors while improving traffic management in the town.

“The regeneration of Rhyl is part of the Council’s work to support well-being and economic prosperity in the county and this work will continue with the Rhyl Town Centre Masterplan.”

New pay and display machines have been installed which accept chip and pin card and contactless payment in addition to cash.

Nadeem Ahmad, Chair of the Rhyl Business Improvement District, and owner of Chrome Menswear and the Jean Emporium, said:

“I’m delighted the newly refurbished Central Car Park is now open.

“A lot of hard work has gone into its modernisation, providing a user friendly, safe and secure parking space, linking well with the High Street with clearly displayed and multiple, up-to-date payment options.”

The car park will be free throughout April.

Further minor renovation work will continue on the car park over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the new SC2 Waterpark opens at 4pm today, with excited visitors already buying tickets in advance.

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said:

“This excellent all-weather facility will be a flag-ship attraction for the seaside town.”
