This year’s Summer Reading Challenge launched at Denbigh Library

Denbigh Library played host to the Wales wide launch of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge Wales yesterday (Wednesday 10 July) along with Author Leisa Mererid and young readers from local school, Ysgol Twm O’r Nant.

Starting by introducing her new book, author Leisa Mererid led the class in learning some yoga moves and breathing exercises, keeping in the theme of this year’s challenge named ‘Marvellous Makers.’

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge, ‘Marvellous Makers’, is designed to celebrate creativity. This can range from dancing to drawing and junk modelling to music, celebrating the endless ways that children are creative.

The Summer Reading Challenge aims to keep children reading over the summer holidays with events, activities and brilliant books – available to access for free from all of Denbighshire’s eight libraries – and provides a free, fun way to keep young minds active.

The annual Summer Reading Challenge is delivered by The Reading Agency and is supported in Wales by the Books Council of Wales, thanks to funding from Welsh Government.

Deborah Owen, Denbighshire County Council’s Principal Librarian said:

“We are so pleased to be launching this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Denbigh Library along with a class from Ysgol Twm O’r Nant.

This year’s challenge is a focus on the different ways young readers express their creativity over the summer, whilst they are on break from school.

There are a number of books available to read during the challenge this time round, in both Welsh and English.”

Councillor Emrys Wynne, Lead Member for Welsh Language, Culture & Heritage said:

“The Summer reading Challenge is an opportunity for the young readers of Denbighshire to put their reading to the test, as they tackle the various stages needed to complete the challenge.

I am glad to see such a successful launch this year at Denbigh Library, and look forward to seeing and congratulating the winners throughout the summer, I wish them all the best.”
