A celebration of the county’s native wildflowers will bloom at the beginning of June

Denbighshire County Council’s Biodiversity Team will be running their inaugural Wildflower Week from Monday June 5.

The Council’s Wildflower Meadows Project started in 2019 and has seen over 10,000 individual plants recorded across all sites involved so far.

For 2023, following feedback from local members and communities, there are 129 meadows this season supporting biodiversity improvement which include highway verges, footpath edges, cycleways and amenity grasslands.

Along with the county roadside nature reserves which take the total number of wildflower sites up to 140, there will be just over 70 acres of meadows helping and protecting local nature.

Protecting our local climate and environment is a key part of the Council’s Climate and Ecology strategy and Wildflower Week aims to invite members of the public to visit the meadows and to see how they are benefiting local nature and community health and wellbeing.

Many events are on offer for members of the public to experience and learn about what goes in to growing more support for local biodiversity through the meadows work.

Open days will be held at the Council’s tree nursery at St Asaph business park where people can see behind the scenes the work that is generating thousands of wildflower plants to help support sites, along with the thousands of trees also being grown on at the site.

Guided wildflower walks will be held during the week across the county at meadows where guests can learn about the different wildflowers, insects and grass species that all come together to support biodiversity growth.

On June 7 the biodiversity team along with partners will hold a pop up wildflower day next to the Nova at Prestatyn which promises to be an informative day all about local nature.

Supporting health and well-being, Yoga in the Meadows and Meadow Mindfulness events will be held to help people become one with the health benefits of supporting your local biodiversity.

The week also includes a Bat walk at Nantclwyd y Dre, Ruthin, Moth trapping and Invertebrate walk events at Ruthin.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are really excited to open the doors to the public to this important project which has really helped improve our local biodiversity since its first shoots started to grow in 2019.

“If you are interested in nature, want to know a bit more about the meadows you see across out county and the role they play or want to experience something unique in the form of Yoga in one of our meadows, please come along, everyone is welcome and our biodiversity team is looking forward to seeing you.”

Please check the Council’s social media for the latest event timetables and information.

This project has also been funded by Welsh Government, through the Local Nature Partnerships Cymru ENRaW project.
