Ysgol Frongoch take a trip to site of Denbighshire’s new recycling depot
On the 25th of September, pupils from Ysgol Frongoch in Denbigh visited the construction site where Denbighshire’s new depot is currently being built to support changes to the household waste collection service coming in 2024.
Pupils from various year groups were given a tour of the site and were taught about the construction process and the important role that the depot will play in protecting and improving the environment when it’s completed allowing for further improvements in Denbighshire’s recycling performance.
They also had opportunities to ask the team their own questions about working in construction, the ongoing building works and how the site will work to support Denbighshire’s recycling when it’s up and running.
Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, also attended the first visit of the day with the pupils to see the progress being made at the site, which will play a vital role in supporting Denbighshire’s recycling services once completed.
Cllr Mellor said: “It’s great to see the progress that is being made on the construction of this crucial recycling sorting depot. This depot will be a major asset to recycling services in Denbighshire and help us to ensure that the county’s recyclable waste is sorted appropriately to help reduce landfill and pollution in our oceans.
“It was great to spend time touring the site with some of the pupils from Ysgol Frongoch and it was refreshing to see the children enthusiastically engaging with the team and asking some great questions about recycling. It’s important to educate children about the importance of recycling from an early age to help promote positive attitudes towards helping the environment.”
Dylan Thomas, Head Teacher at Ysgol Frongoch said: “The school’s trip to the construction site for the new recycling depot provided a great opportunity for our pupils to see what goes on at a real-life construction site and learn more about what happens to our recycling after it leaves our homes.
“The new curriculum for Wales promotes learning through real-life experiences and we were thrilled to be able to give the children the opportunity to visit a site which will become a vital resource for their local community; an experience that they all thoroughly enjoyed!”
