Residents and visitors alike will soon be able to benefit from enhancements to Green Lane car park in Corwen as a result of funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund (LUF)

During the first round of LUF, Denbighshire County Council was successful in its joint application with Wrexham County Borough Council for the Clwyd South Constituency, which was supported by Simon Baynes MP. Denbighshire secured £3.8 million to invest in the communities of Llangollen, Llantysilio, Corwen and surrounding areas.

Corwen has already benefitted from the LUF investment in the area through the recent completion of a new canopy at the Corwen heritage railway station, while 2 further projects to improve town centre infrastructure will also be taking place. The first phase of these projects began at the start of July with the Corwen highway improvement scheme, while the second phase of works to improve town centre infrastructure is scheduled to begin on the 4th of September to be completed by early autumn 2023.

So far, the LUF investment in Green Lane car park has seen the installation of EV charging points at the site, which will be coming online later this summer. This is part of a wider scheme by the Council to build a car park network of EV chargers across the county as part of their overall action to tackle climate change following the declaration of a Climate and Ecological Emergency in 2019 and adoption of the Climate and Ecological Change Strategy in 2021.

Further enhancements to the Green Lane care park will continue with the refurbishment of the toilet block, signage works and a new bus layby and associated markings. The principal contractor for the project is Tom James Construction Services Ltd and is scheduled to begin on Monday, 4th of September for up to 6 weeks.

Cllr Jason McLellan, Council Leader and Lead Member for Economic Growth & Tackling Deprivation said: “We are pleased to see the progress being made in Corwen to complete the projects in receipt of Levelling Up funding in the area. We look forward to the culmination of all these Corwen-based projects and hope that they will benefit the community for years to come.

“The Green Lane car park will provide convenient parking facilities for both residents and visitors alike to visit the area and enjoy what that the town has to offer. We are also delighted that this project has been able to contribute to the Council’s wider long-term goal to become a Net Carbon Zero and Ecologically Positive Council by 2030.”
