A North Wales secondary school has unveiled a new immersive sensory classroom designed to provide enhanced support for pupils with additional learning needs (ALN).

Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph has completed work on the specialist classroom, which uses projection technology, lighting and sound to create interactive environments tailored to the needs of individual learners.

The facility features three wall-mounted projectors capable of surrounding pupils with immersive visual scenes, while LED lighting adapts to match the projected environments, helping create calming and engaging learning experiences.

School leaders say the new classroom will support both one-to-one learning and smaller group sessions within the school’s Encil behavioural support and ALN provision area.

The project began during the February half-term break and involved significant alterations to an existing classroom, including light-blocking measures, electrical upgrades and installation of specialist audio-visual equipment.

Approximately 20 built-in immersive scenes are currently available, while staff are also being trained to develop and upload custom environments tailored to individual pupil requirements.

Education leaders say immersive sensory technology is increasingly being used in schools to help pupils with communication difficulties, sensory processing needs, anxiety and behavioural challenges by creating adaptable and low-stimulation learning environments.

Geraint Davies, Head of Education at Denbighshire County Council, described the new facility as “a brilliant asset” for both staff and pupils.

Meanwhile, Ysgol Glan Clwyd Headteacher Sian Alwen said progressive ALN support remained a priority for the school and that the specialist classroom would help pupils “overcome challenges” through more tailored provision.

The development reflects growing investment across Wales in specialist learning environments and inclusive education provision, as schools increasingly adopt technology-led approaches to support diverse learning needs.
