Safe disposal of batteries urged during festive season

denbighshire council

Residents are being advised to make sure they make the right options to safely dispose f household batteries during Christmas.

Denbighshire County Council is calling on families to be vigilant when deciding to dispose of run down batteries that have powered Christmas gifts over the holidays.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Incorrectly disposing batteries can cause serious problems. Last year we had a fire break out caused by household batteries at the Ruthin Recycling Centre but luckily it was contained.

“It’s the season of giving and many battery powered toys and gifts will be given during the festive holidays and we just want to make sure people can dispose of their spent batteries in the safest way.”

Residents are advised that batteries can’t be recycled in the blue mixed recycling bin or clear recycling sacks. If you are buying battery powered gifts try to use rechargeable ones where possible.

Any type of batteries must not be placed in any waste containers due to the risk of fire in resident’s bins, Council waste collection vehicles or at the waste treatment facility.

Batteries are harmful to the environment and must be recycled by specialist companies.

Residents can use free battery recycling facilities provided by large electrical retailers and supermarkets to dispose of batteries safely when visiting these shops.
