Finding work harder than ever for many people.

Carmarthen-1

The Salvation Army is hosting a drop-in event at Connah’s Quay where jobseekers can speak to employment experts and take their first steps towards finding work.

The event will take place at The Salvation Army on Dee Road, CH5 4NX, on Wednesday 24 June from 10am to 12pm. It comes as the church and charity warns that finding work is becoming harder than ever for many people.

Visitors will be able to access employment advice, training and volunteering opportunities, as well as view live job vacancies from 10 exhibitors including WeMindTheGap, Social Care Wales, Warm Wales and Recruit for Staff.

Abi Gardner, Assistant Regional Manager of Employment Plus in Wales for The Salvation Army, said:

“Across the country, The Salvation Army’s Employment Plus services are seeing fewer entry-level opportunities and longer job queues. This means many people who already struggle in the labour market, particularly those who are not yet ‘job ready’, are being left behind.

“Employment Plus supports people into quality work, not just any job. It helps those facing the biggest barriers to employment, such as a lack of up-to-date skills, caring responsibilities, health problems, disability or homelessness.”

Around 5,500 people in the local area were claiming unemployment-related benefits on average in 2025. As this is the main route through which the government provides employment support, it suggests that around 8,400 people, or 60.3% of those experiencing real unemployment, may not receive this support(1).

The Employment Plus service is delivered from 327 Salvation Army churches, centres and homeless services. It also operates in a further 230 locations, including Jobcentre Plus sites and partner organisations, as well as 13 prisons.

Maia Ramsden, Employability Support Apprentice in Connah’s Quay, is preparing for her first Employability Day in the role. She said:

“As an Employability Support Apprentice, I see first-hand how our work changes people’s lives. Employability Day is a reminder of how important it is to put the person first and understand their individual needs, while making it easy for people to access support. I’m proud to be part of a team that helps and encourages people to move forward with hope and purpose.”
