Clients come to the gym to help improve their health and fitness, but if you don’t invest in health and safety, it could be dangerous for them. A recent survey found that more than 40% of gymgoers in the UK have injured themselves during training but there are things you can do to protect staff and clients.

A fitness facility is no different from other workplaces when it comes to hazards. In fact, gyms actually may have more situations that pose a safety risk to members and staff due to the heavy machinery used regularly and manual lifting done there.

There are many hazards that staff need to be able to identify in a gym centre, ranging from physical and mechanical hazards to chemical and biological. These can involve the unsafe use of equipment, exposure to cleaning chemicals, or unclean and unsuitable work environments.

Failure to recognise these hazards can result in serious injury for both clients and employees. The most common exercise injuries include sprains and strains that can affect any part of the body as well as chronic back pain and stress fractures.

How can you improve your gym to ensure the safety of its members?

Conduct a risk assessment

First thing first, you need to identify any hazards and establish who is at risk to them. Once this is completed, you can select control methods that will eliminate or reduce the safety threat. This typically involves surveying your gym and thoroughly inspecting your machinery and equipment. Ensure everything is properly serviced with the right lubricants and operating as it should be.

Regular staff safety training

Your employees need the right safety training to maintain standards in your gym when you’re not there and to protect clients. Regular safety training should be provided to staff with information on fitness, first aid, and health and safety.

Your staff should have comprehensive knowledge of how to use all the equipment in your gym safely so they can identify any unsafe practices. They should also be fully trained to administer first aid on-site in case of an accident.

Inductions for new gym users

It’s unlikely that every new member at your gym knows how to use all your equipment from the get-go so it is your duty to provide them with adequate training. This will ensure clients know how to use the machinery correctly and can avoid injury.

In your induction, you should also provide information on health and hygiene and stretching strategies. Also, you should identify where vending machines and water fountains are located.
